How To Make Your Own Yarn Pom Poms

Pom Poms are the wildcards of crafting. They can add a soft and colorful touch to everything from hats, scarves, Easter cards, to shoelaces and, even, cats!

These wonderful balls of joy were one of my first DYI projects and remain my go-to method to use scrap yarn and add a cute accent to everyday things.

Here is a quick tutorial on how to make them:

DIY POM-POMS

You Need:

-Yarn (the more you have, the fluffier the pompoms)

-Scissors

Instructions:

  1. Place the yarn on the palm side of your hand, making sure to leave a tail that extends beyond the tips of your fingers.

  2. Hold the yarn at the bottom of your fingers with your thumb. Then begin wrapping around 4 fingers and the tail you placed before.

  3. Keep wrapping until you have gone at least 50 times around your fingers

  4. NOTE: The more times you wrap the yarn around your fingers, the merrier! More wraps = bigger, fluffier pompoms.

  5. I illustrate 3 sizes in the pictures: 50 wraps (orange), 80 wraps(red), and 100 wraps (blue). Play around and find your favorites!

  6. Cut off the yarn a few inches away from your hand.

  7. Carefully, pull all the loops off your fingers at once (keep them as bunched together as possible). Don't lose the tails!

  8. Take the tails and bring them around the bunched up loops and double-knot them as tightly as possible.

  9. Insert your scissors in the loops of the yarn doughnut you just created. Cut each loop at the top, to separate them into individual hairs.

  10. Once all the loops are cut, give your pompom a haircut! Snip off unusually long tips and make it as round as possible without cutting the tail ends.

That's it!! Remember to use the longer tails to attach them to other projects or to hang them in order to make a cute mobile.

I hope this was useful! Feel free to check out the Eureka Moments' Pinterest page to see what projects you can attach these pompoms to!

Stay crafty, friends!
